The March for Science, a global organization that advocates for evidence-based science policies that serve all communities has scheduled the Las Vegas event for Saturday, April 14, 2018 - Citizen Science Day

 

More than one million people, in more than 600 locations across all seven continents joined together on April 22, 2017 for the single largest event in support of science in history.  March for Science Las Vegas had an estimated 2,500 attendees.  Since the initial March, science has continued to face increasing threats at the federal, state, and local levels.  But science will not stay silent on April 14, 2018.

Wetlands Park Bio Blitz

BioBlitz is a fun day of science in the park! Participants will identify plants, mammals, birds & birds with the help of scientists and naturalists. All observations are entered into a global database, iNaturalist, to help track biodiversity.

Jr. Paleontologist Day with Dr. Josh Bonde

UNLV & Las Vegas Natural History Museum/Las Vegas Science & Technology Festival

Join Museum Paleontologist Josh Bonde at the NEW Tule Springs State Park. We will meet at the Shadow Ridge High School Parking Lot. This will be a pedestrian tour, so pack plenty of water and a snack. We will be hiking a few miles round trip (depending on group interest). We will overview the interesting geology of the area and then visit some historical dig sites from the 1960's where Radiocarbon dating came of age. We will also see some fossils on the ground. It is important to note that collecting fossils on State or Federal Land is illegal without a permit from the relevant land management agency. Come for a hike, learn about our past, and maybe find a treasure for our future. Wear clothes that can get dirty!

Discovery Children’s Museum is offering free admission to its 5,000 square foot traveling exhibit, “Design Zone” where visitors have the chance to go behind the scenes and see how video game developers, music producers, roller coaster designers and other creative problem solvers implement math to accomplish fantastic things.  Design Zone explores mathematical concepts such as patterns, variables, scale, slope, and ratios used by artists, architects, engineers, musicians and other innovators.

He has worked on films like The Empire Strikes Back, ET, Back to the Future, Inception and Guardians of the Galaxy.  He currently works for Skywalker Sound. Mr Roesch will be speaking about the science of sound in the movies and conduction some foley demonstrations at varios times throughout the event.

Astronaut Dr. Don Thomas – Living & Working in Space

In 1990, Dr. Don Thomas was selected in NASA’s 13th group of astronauts and flew as a mission specialist on four space shuttle missions:  STS-65, STS-70, STS-83 and STS-94.  During these four missions he performed hundreds of microgravity science experiments and helped deploy a large communications satellite from the space shuttle. He spent a total of 44 days in space and has completed 692 orbits around space.  He is an author and public speaker and still actively engaged in inspiring our next generation of engineers, scientists and explorers.
