International “Friendly” Games Thursday-Friday

 The second weekend of the Las Vegas Mayor’s Cup International Showcase brings 262 female teams, ages 11-19, from around the world Feb. 22-24 to compete on valley fields at four different parks. The showcase is co-hosted by the city of Las Vegas and the Downtown Las Vegas Soccer Club, and is expected to bring about $28 million into the local economy over 10 days, according to Downtown Las Vegas Soccer Club President Roger Tabor. The showcase is expecting college soccer coaches and recruiters from across the country to scout the young athletes. Spectator admission and parking are free at all games. Parking is limited; carpooling and public transportation are recommended. Spectators are encouraged to bring their own seating.

Pre-tournament international “friendly” games are scheduled at the following times and locations. The friendly games have moved to Ed Fountain Park field 1, at 1400 N. Decatur Blvd., on Thursday and on Friday to All-American Park field 4, at 1551 S. Buffalo Drive. Tournament matches also will be played at Bettye Wilson Soccer Complex, 7353 Eugene Ave. and Kellogg Zaher Sports Complex at 7901 W. Washington Ave.

     Tournament matches will be played from 10 a.m. (depending on weather), to 10 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Teams participating in the Showcase are guaranteed four games. Championship games for under 12 year olds will be played at All-American Park on Sunday starting at 2 p.m.  Championship games for over 13 year olds will be played on Sunday at Bettye Wilson Soccer Complex starting at 10 a.m. Medals and trophies will be presented to winning teams following each championship game, expected to be 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Ward 4 Councilman Stavros S. Anthony will present trophies and awards Feb. 24 from 2:30 to 4 p.m. at Bettye Wilson Soccer Complex.

Teams are expected from Canada, Mexico, and 27 U.S. states. Teams are coming from Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
